Gene Torrens
Gene L. Torrens was chosen as the Director of the Sarpy Serenaders in 2011. He came to us as an accomplished musical director and leader. Previously, he had been involved in coaching and music education throughout his professional career. Gene had a 33 year career as a choral conductor in public schools and in church music. He worked for Faith Westwood United Methodist Church , directing the Chancel Choir for 30 years. While teaching music at Elkhorn High School for the final 28 years of his career. In addition Gene wore many hats while teaching. He was the director for all the Choral Ensembles, the Fine Arts Curriculum Chair, past President of the Elkhorn Education Association, Drama Club sponsor, Musical Director, and Head Boys Soccer Coach with over 200 wins to his credit. While teaching Gene was recognized as a respected music judge and clinician. In 1999 he was awarded the Distinguished service Award by the Nebraska Music Educators Association, and in 2004 he was recognized by the National Federation of High School Activities Associations as the Outstanding Music Educator for the state of Nebraska.
Gene has celebrated over 40+ years of marriage to his wife Becky. They have three married daughters and a total of eight grandchildren. He retired from teaching in 2005 and following that he retired from coaching in 2010.
